How to Coupon - Part One

The first step to learning how to coupon is to utilize your coupons sources. Start buying newspapers. You can call your local newspaper and ask if there is a discount if you subscribe to buy multiple papers every Sunday. If not, some dollar stores sell newspapers for cheap.

 If you have watched TLC’s Extreme Couponing and seen their massive collection of coupon inserts, you won’t want to start out like this because it will probably overwhelm you. Being a newbie to couponing you should probably start out buying 1-3 newspapers a week. The Sunday paper comes with Red Plum, Smart Source, and sometimes Procter and Gamble inserts. There are also coupon clipping services where you can purchase whole inserts, or multiple copies of coupons.

Another important source of coupons is printing coupons. For free! I use several coupons that print from home when I go shopping.
A lot of stores that have loyalty cards, like Kroger and Tom Thumb, allow you to use digital coupons as well. All you have to do is go to their site, find the digital coupons section, put in your loyalty card number and add the coupons that you want. There are other sites you can load the coupons to your card on too, like CellFire. Just remember to read up on the policies before you plan your shopping trip. There is usually a limit of usage per digi-coupon, and don’t forget about the expiration dates.

Something else to remember: If you came from watching the show Extreme Couponing don't expect to immediately have a ridiculous stockpile after the first shopping trip. It would take a many shopping trips over time to have that much stuff. The show is called Extreme Couponing after all. I personally have a small stockpile that does not take up crazy amounts of space in my house. You don't have to go nuts and buy things that you would never use. I only buy things that my family uses regulary, and I buy enough that will last until the next time it goes on sale.
